Each year since 1985, the Whiting Foundation, based in New York City, has celebrated and supported emerging writers in the fields of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama by bestowing the Whiting Awards. These Awards, which grant winning writers $50,000 each, recognize the writers' achievements thus far and the promise of their work to come. Previous winners include Colson Whitehead, Jericho Brown, Alexander Chee, Michael Cunningham, Lydia Davis, Jeffrey Eugenides, Denis Johnson, Tony Kushner, Victor Lavalle, Alce McDermott, Sigrid Nunez, William T.
