PhilomenaSometime in 2002, a young female prairie dog was dropped off and abandoned on a Long Island beach – another wanted pet left to die, like so many dogs and cats that were dumped there before her. She survived the tough winter alone, underground, in a wild place where no other prairie dogs exist. By the spring of the following year, she had attracted so much attention that a rescue team was called in to save her life – in an event that also drew the eye of the local and national news media. This book is based on the true story of the rescue in the summer of 2003 of “Fire Island Philomena,” as she came to be known.

Caryn Eve Murray is a freelance writer and an assistant editor at Newsday (Long Island, N.Y.), where she was also a reporter and feature writer. She is a past winner of Women in Communications' Clarion Award. She is a New York State-licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

Rod Eyer is a freelance artist and graphic designer at Newsday. His awards include Society of News Design, Associated Press and the Deadline Club of NYC.
