line

Larry Kirwan is best known as the voice leading the band Black 47, whose brand of music is self-described as “…an unblinkingly political and thoroughly Irish form of rock 'n' roll, with songs covering topics from the Northern Ireland conflict to civil rights and urban unrest in contemporary New York.” Off stage, Kirwan is also an accomplished writer and playwright, the author of Mad Angels, a collection of plays; Liverpool Fantasy, an alternative history of the Beatles; and Green Suede Shoes: An Irish-American Odyssey, an autobiography.

Now, Kirwan presents Rockin’ the Bronx, a novel in which he explores the harsh realities of the Bronx’s Bainbridge Avenue in the 1980s through the eyes of four young illegal Irish immigrants. Kirwan’s latest work is an unsparing look at the inter-racial tensions that would lead to the flight of the Irish, while also a tender snapshot of the glory days of Irish influence in the Bronx.
